Digital Universe

The Digital Universe Fundation is starting a big new project called the Digital Universe. This project wants to be a worldwide effort to organize the best information and the most accurate representation of reality into a Digital Universe freely accessible on the Internet.

Through a global collaboration of stewards (experts, organizations, universities) they want to collaboratively create a free, public-service oriented, non-commercial subset of the Web. Navigating this web subset would be done using an open-source 3D web browser trying to «reshape the web as it was meant to be» (using their own words).

Bluff or a real potential? Time will surely tell, but the board directors list seems promising.
